On 21st May 1799, Mary Anning was born. She was a fossil collector and paleontologist. At age 12, she found the first identified ichthyosaur sceleton (depicted in the illustration). Being a woman she was excluded from the Geological Society of London and did not receive full credit for her scientific contributions. Nontheless, she continued excavating and researching fossils, mainly in her hometown Lyme Regis, Dorset (England). Nowadays, many of her findings are exhibited at the Natural History Museum in London.
