I created these spot illustrations for a uni project about coppice – a technique for harvesting wood.
About every ten years the trees get cut down to just above ground level. The trees grow back multiple shoots, creating the characteristic look of a coppice forest. This technique was very popular in Europe during the middle ages. Though, nowadays almost forgotten, it offers a sustainable alternative to timber forest monocultures. Coppice areas are habitates for endangered species and offer space for other plants that can be harvested, such as herbs, mushrooms, and berries.
